3d software – Blender Introduction

    This is the 1st regular post of CG training catagory of my blog.

    One by one, I will be covering most of the aspect of computer graphics especially 3d CG.

So, to start with let me introduce you one of my favorite 3d software called ‘Blender’

    About Blender:

    Blender is a free and open source 3d content development software. In spite of being ‘free’ it is a very professional and widely used 3d application. It is based on OpenGL graphics API and runs on most of the widely used Operating Systems (Yes it runs very well on Windows, Mac and Linux too)

    Blender supports almost all areas in 3d graphics, for example: 3d Modeling, sculpting, Full fledged character rigging, key frame animation, procedural animation, Non linear editing, image and texture painting, python scripting, UV unwrapping, Particles and fluid simulations, Cloth simulation, hairs, fur, soft-body and rigid-body dynamics simulation, rendering, node based compositing, audio-video sequencing (video-editing), interactive content development (game development) and so on…

    This means it has tool sets for almost every thing that is needed to make an animation short or a film, advertisements or even a 3d game. Throughout the next CG training blog posts and tutorials we are going to see blender a lot. So stay tuned!

English Version of my first article – 18 Nov 2003

 Following is the English version of my first article, originally published in ‘Sakal’ Daily News paper, Pune, on 18 Nov 2003, in Marathi. The translation is done by my wife ‘Shruti’. I decided to post this English translation, after I received few responses from some readers and friends, asking for the same. Please leave your comments and suggestions.

About the 3D animation sector of computer graphics, which has made huge economical and industrial revolution all over the world, and which has become a big source of knowledge and earnings, for many artists…

‘The lion king’, ‘Tarzan’, ‘Toy story’, ‘Tom & Jerry’, ‘The Mummy’, ‘Star Wars’, ‘Jurassic park’…. the list is end-less, it goes on and on. What was behind all these movies that influenced the audience so much? Just one thing and that was excellent efforts put forth by the artists. In above all the examples one thing that is common is CG (Computer graphics). Using this CG, impossible things are made possible. In today’s age of ‘IT’ this is one of the most powerful medium that has reached up to the common man. Off course, this technology is not used just for entertainment purpose, but also in the fields of education, engineering, internet, medical, advertisements, case-studies and game developments.

Article Published in ‘Sakal’ – 18 Nov 2003

Hello all,

Following is my first article which was published in ‘Sakal’s Appointments supplement on Tue, 18th Nov 2003. (‘Sakal’ is a popular Marathi daily newspaper). I had a very huge response from readers of Sakal from Pune and Aurangabad after it got published. Thanks to Sakal Newspaper group. Thanks to ‘Horizon Graphics’ with whom I was working at that time. कॉम्पुटर ग्राफिक्स ३ डी अॅनिमेशन

जगभरात मोठ्या प्रमाणात आर्थिक, औद्योगिक उलाढाल घडवून आणणार्‍या; तसेच अनेक कलाकारांसाठी एक नवी ज्ञानशाखा व उत्पन्नाचे नवे साधन ठरलेल्या, कॉम्प्युटर ग्राफिक्स क्षेत्राच्या 3D Animation शाखेविषयी.

 

‘द लायन किंग’, ‘टारझन’, टॉम अँड जेरी’, ‘टॉय स्टोरी’, ‘ज्युरासिक पार्क’, ‘स्टार वॉर्स’, ‘द ममी’… हुशऽऽऽ… ही यादी न संपणारी आहे! दर्शकांना थक्क करून सोडणाऱ्या या सर्व कलाकृतींच्या मागे काय होते? एकच गोष्ट, ती म्हणजे अनेक कलाकारांची कमाल. वरील सर्व उदाहरणात एक मुख्य तंत्रज्ञान वापरले जाते, ते म्हणजे कॉम्प्युटर ग्राफिक्स (CG). त्याचा वापर करून हे कलाकार अनेक अशक्यप्राय गोष्टी आपल्याला दाखवतात. माहिती तंत्रज्ञानाच्या, या युगात लोकांच्या ह्रदयापर्यंत पोचणारे हे सर्वात प्रभावी माध्यम ठरलेले आहे. अर्थात या तंत्रज्ञानाचा वापर केवळ मनोरंजन किंवा करमणुकीपुरता न राहता शैक्षणिक, वैद्यकीय, अभियांत्रिकी, जाहिरात, इंटरनेट, केसस्टडी, गेम डेव्हेलपमेंट अशा अनेक क्षेत्रांमध्ये केला जातो.

कॉम्प्युटर ग्राफिक्स हे दुसरे तिसरे काही नसून, कागदावर चित्रे काढणे, विविध वस्तूंच्या कागद, पुठ्ठा इ. माध्यमांचा वापर करून प्रतिकृती तयार करणे, अशाच कलांची पुढची पायरी आहे. येथे संगणक हा फक्त मदतीपुरता असतो. त्यामुळे मेहनत करावीच लागते. या तंत्रज्ञानाचे वर्गीकरण पुढील काही प्रकारात करता येईल. १) ड्रॉइंग व पेंटिंग, २) इमेज/व्हिडिओ एडिटिंग, ३) 2D अॅनिमेशन, ४) वेब डिझायनिंग, DTP इ., ५) 3D मॉडेलिंग, अॅनिमेशन, ६) सिम्युलेशन व अॅनॅलिसीस, ७) पोस्ट प्रॉडक्शन व कंपोझिटिंग टेक्निक्स इ.

येथे गरजेनुसार वरील विविध तंत्रांचा योग्य प्रकारे वापर करणे हे वापरकर्त्याचे (USER) कसब असते. तंत्र हाताळण्याच्या पद्धतीनुसार द्विमितीय (2 Dimensional) व त्रिमितीय (3 Dimensional) असे दोन मुख्य प्रकार पडतात. 2D ग्राफिक्स व 2D अॅनिमेशन यांबद्दल मोठ्या प्रमाणावर माहिती उपलब्ध असल्यामुळे येथे आपण फक्त 3D तंत्रज्ञानाचा विचार करणार आहोत. त्यात त्रिमिती, 3DCG, मॉडेलिंग, अॅनिमेशन व त्याचा वापर इ. क्रमाक्रमाने पाहू या.
